But experts are warning consumers to be careful this Halloween season and make sure they only buy contacts from reputable suppliers that require a prescription.
“Whether it corrects your vision, or you’re wearing it just for fun, or in this case, dressing up for Halloween, it doesn’t matter. A lens is a medical device, and in this country, a medical device is regulated by the FDA [ regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which means products must be inspected and approved before they can be legally imported into this country,” Dr. L. Steinemann, clinical spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, told Healthline.
While novelty touches may be considered part of clothing, they are not considered cosmetic in the United States. They cannot be sold over the counter without a prescription.
It is illegal for beauty salons, party shops, clothing stores and online retailers to sell contacts without a prescription.
“If you’re buying contacts from street vendors who don’t require a prescription…that’s illegal and that’s a red flag for buyers. If someone is willing to sell you footage without a doubt, they’re basically Gets you involved in an illegal trade, and … it’s probably a good bet that the lens isn’t approved for legal sale in the U.S.,” Steinemann said.
The FDA said it was aware of multiple suppliers illegally selling contact lenses in the United States for as little as $20.
They advise consumers not to buy contacts from street vendors, salons, beauty supply stores, boutiques, flea markets, novelty stores, Halloween stores, record or video stores, convenience stores, beach stores or Internet sites that do not require a prescription.
“There is no way to know whether those who break the law and sell them without a prescription are selling quality lenses or dangerous junk. Improper or improperly manufactured lenses can cause scratches on the surface of the eye, which in itself is very painful,” Dr. Colin McCannel, professor of clinical ophthalmology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and medical director of the Stein Eye Center, told Healthline.
“To make matters worse, once a scratch occurs, the risk of infection increases. Corneal infection from contact lenses is a very serious problem that can lead to blindness,” he said.
Lenses that are imported into the United States without approval are sometimes contaminated with bacteria on the lenses.
Those wishing to wear decorative lenses on Halloween can do so safely if they obtain a prescription from a qualified eye care professional.
Contact lenses are not a “one size fits all” medical device. Both Steinemann and McCannel say it’s critical to measure the eye correctly so that the lens fits correctly.
“There are certain measurements on the surface of your eye, your qualified ophthalmologist (your ophthalmologist or optometrist) will measure and make sure the lens parameters fit the surface, then see how the lens fits on the eye, like trying on shoes same to make sure the shoe fits,” says Steinemann.
Another benefit of getting a prescription for decorative lenses through a qualified eye care professional is that the wearer will be properly trained to wear and care for the lenses in an appropriate manner. This includes proper cleaning practices.
Even if decorative lenses are obtained legally, Steinemann said consumers still need to be aware of the potential risks of wearing contact lenses.
“One thing people may not realize is Halloween, theatrical, or decorative lenses are filled with a lot of dye. Dyes don’t allow the surface of your eyes to breathe as well, so you can’t really do the same thing as someone who is nearsighted or farsighted wearing clear corrective lenses Wear tinted lenses. The surface of the eye needs oxygen from the atmosphere, so when you have a piece of plastic — or worse, a piece of painted plastic — that blocks the flow of oxygen, it’s not very healthy for the eye,” he said.
Symptoms such as redness or pain in the eye, feeling as if there is something in the eye, sensitivity to light, or decreased vision are all signs of a possible eye infection. They require immediate attention from a qualified eye care professional.
Steinemann advises people to think carefully about whether they need contact lenses this Halloween and not risk buying from suppliers who are not authorized contact lens dealers.
