Experts say the colored contact lenses that create vampire or zombie eyes during Halloween can damage the eyes

Experts say the colored contact lenses that create vampire or zombie eyes during Halloween can damage the eyes. Make sure you have a prescription before using them.
But experts are warning consumers to be careful this Halloween season, making sure they only buy contact lenses from trusted vendors that require a prescription.
“It doesn’t matter if they correct your vision, or you just wear them for fun, or in this case, a Halloween costume. The lens is a medical device, and in this country, medical devices are regulated by the FDA. [FDA U.S. Food and Drug Administration], which means products must be tested and approved before they can be legally brought into the country,” Dr. Thomas L. Steinemann, clinical spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, told Healthline.

While new contact lenses may be considered part of the clothing, they are not considered cosmetic in the US. They are not sold without a prescription.
Beauty salons, party supply stores, clothing stores and online retailers that sell contact lenses without a prescription are against the law.
“If you buy contact lenses from a street vendor who doesn’t need a prescription…it’s illegal and a wake-up call for shoppers. it’s an illegal trade, and … you can bet that this lens is not legally sold in the US,” said Steinemann.
The FDA has said it is aware of several vendors illegally selling contact lenses in the United States for as little as $20.
They advise consumers to never buy contact lenses from street vendors, salons, cosmetics stores, boutiques, flea markets, novelty stores, Halloween stores, record or video stores, convenience stores, beach shops, or internet sites that do not require a prescription.
“There is no way to know if those who break the law and sell over-the-counter lenses are premium lenses or dangerous junk. Misplaced or poorly made lenses can scratch the surface of the eye, which is painful in itself,” California says. This was stated by Dr. Colin McCannel, Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of California, Los Angeles and Medical Director of Stein Eye. The center told Healthline.
“Worse, as soon as a scratch appears, the risk of infection increases. Corneal infection from contact lenses is a very serious problem that can lead to blindness,” he said.
Lenses imported into the US without authorization have in some cases been contaminated with bacteria.
Those who want to wear decorative lenses for Halloween can do so safely if they get a prescription from a qualified ophthalmologist.
Contact lenses are not a universal medical device. Both Steinemann and McCannell say it’s important to measure the eye correctly so that the lenses fit correctly.
“There are certain measurements on the surface of your eye, and your qualified optometrist – your ophthalmologist or optometrist – will measure and make sure that the parameters of the lens match the surface, and then see if the lens fits the eye, just like trying on shoes to make sure that the shoes fit,” says Steinemann.
Another benefit of obtaining a prescription for cosmetic lenses from a qualified ophthalmologist is that the user will be trained in proper lens wear and lens care techniques. This includes proper cleaning methods.
Even if decorative lenses are legally available, Steinemann says consumers should still be aware of the potential risks associated with wearing artificial lenses.
“One thing that people may not realize is that Halloween, theatrical or decorative lenses are filled with a lot of dye. The paint doesn’t allow the surface of your eye to breathe well, so you can’t wear clear corrective lenses like someone else. who are nearsighted or farsighted. Always wear tinted lenses. The surface of the eye needs oxygen from the atmosphere, so when you have a piece of plastic – or worse, a piece of colored plastic – blocking the flow of oxygen, it’s not very good for the eyes,” he said.
Symptoms such as redness or pain in the eye, a feeling of something in the eye, sensitivity to light, or decreased vision are all signs of a possible eye infection. They require the immediate attention of a qualified ophthalmologist.
