With Halloween only a few days away, you’ve probably ordered some colored contact lenses to add an extra fear factor to your costume, but you might want to reconsider using them. These lenses may seem harmless, but they can easily damage your eyes and cause vision loss.Express.co.uk chat with All About Vision’s ophthalmologist and vision specialist Dr Brian Boxer Wachler about the dos and don’ts of coloured contact lenses.
Don’t put your health at risk for a fun night out!Tinted contact lenses can be very dangerous.
Dr Brian Boxer Wachler, an ophthalmologist and vision expert at All About Vision, warns: “Halloween is all about mixing fun with fear, but there’s nothing exciting about jeopardizing your vision.
“If tinted contact lenses are purchased online rather than from an ophthalmologist, there is an increased risk of complications such as infection, scarring, blurred vision or vision loss.”
“Anything you put on your eyeball can cause an injury or infection that can lead to vision loss.”
Decades of research and development have produced colored and contact lenses that are safe when properly prescribed, properly worn, and carefully maintained.
However, not all Halloween contact lenses meet these guidelines, and you should always triple-check your lenses and consult a professional before wearing them.
According to Dr. Boxer Wachler, the safety of these special lenses, also known as contact lenses, comes down to buying from the right people and wearing them in the right way.
Dr Boxer Wachler said: “It’s not worth the risk at all – having an ophthalmologist order them or at least evaluate them before putting them on the eye.
“Whatever you do, don’t forget that your vision depends on you making the right decisions about your eyes.”
According to the Specsavers website, all coloured contact lenses supplied in the UK, including over-the-counter lenses, are now classified as medical devices and can only be supplied or supervised by a registered optician.
