Last Halloween, Jordyn Oakland, a professional makeup artist and aesthetician from Seattle, Washington, shared her horrific experience with contact lenses on TikTok.The 27-year-old claims a pair of “blackout” contact lenses she bought from an online boutique for her clothing removed the outer layer of her cornea, leaving her in “extreme pain”.

According to Oakland, she was initially hesitant about wearing contact lenses despite seeing a lot of people wearing them online.Auckland told the Daily Mail that when she first tried to remove the lenses, they felt “stuck”.
“So the second time I went in, I grabbed it a little tighter and took it out of my eye and it was just full of tears and I immediately felt like I had a really bad eye in my eye. scratches,” she told the Daily Mail.”I just started filling my eyes with eye drops and splashing it with cold water. It felt like there was something stuck in my eye, so I kept rinsing and rinsing and rinsing trying to get it out.”
Although she initially thought she had to “get some sleep,” Oakland went to the emergency room the next day.In another TikTok video, she claimed she almost lost her vision, was unable to open her eyes for four days and was asked to wear a blindfold for two weeks.
Dr. Kevin Hagerman, a non-licensed registered optometrist who does not treat Auckland, reminds people that contact lenses are medical devices that come in all shapes, sizes, application styles and materials.
Hagerman told Yahoo Canada that if contact lenses don’t fit properly, tight-fitting lenses can adhere to and remove the corneal epithelium, the extremely fragile layer of cells that coats the cornea, causing “short-term visual impairment and long-term recurring question.”
Auckland’s call for people to avoid ordering clothing contact lenses online was echoed by another non-practicing registered optometrist, Dr Marianne Reid, who also did not treat Auckland.
According to Reid, all contact lens purchases should be made through a registered eye care professional who will provide a complete ocular vision evaluation. The initial evaluation will include an in-depth assessment of the anterior segment of the eye, focusing on the cornea, eyelids, eyelashes and conjunctiva – the membrane that covers the eye and lines the eyelids and the secretory system that produces and drains tears, as well as measurements of corneal curvature.
Optometrists need multiple appointments throughout the year to monitor their patients and contact lens wear in addition to initial fittings, Reid said.
“It’s not that the lenses themselves are harmful, it’s that the lenses are inappropriate in many cases, causing problems for patients,” Reid explained to Yahoo Canada.”If the lens does not fit properly, there may be corneal abrasion, repeated corneal erosion or irritation, or the conjunctival tissue may react negatively to the lens.

Medical emergencies, such as corneal ulcers that cause open ulcers in the cornea, can also occur, require immediate medical attention, and can lead to rapid and permanent vision deterioration.
“The take-home message is to never buy contact lenses without evaluating the fit,” says Hagerman.”A properly worn contact lens should not be difficult to remove. Lubrication with an approved contact lens lubricant before attempting contact lens removal can loosen the contact lens and minimize damage to the cornea.”
